Why the First Two Weeks Matter: Capturing Your Newborn While They’re Still Sleepy & Squishy

There is nothing quite like the first two weeks of a newborn’s life.

It’s a blur of tiny stretches, milk-drunk smiles, wrinkly toes, and the sweetest sleepy snuggles. And then — almost overnight — they change.

That’s why photographing your newborn during those first 14 days is so incredibly special.

They’re Sleepy in a Way They’ll Never Be Again

In the early days, babies are naturally cuddlier and sleepier. They’ve just come from the womb, and they still love to be tucked in close, folded up, and snuggled tight.

During this session, you can see that beautiful, peaceful sleep — the way baby rests so perfectly in mom’s arms, completely relaxed and content. That deep newborn sleep allows for those dreamy, calm portraits that feel soft and timeless.

In just a couple of weeks, babies become more alert, more stretched out, and much more aware of the world around them. Those sleepy, womb-like poses become harder to capture.

They’re Still So Tiny and Squishy

The way newborns curl into their parents’ chests…

The way their legs tuck in close…

The way their tiny fingers wrap instinctively around yours…

Those details change so fast.

In these photos, you can see how naturally baby fits into mom and dad’s arms — so small, so new. The scale of it all is breathtaking. Within a month, they’ll fill out, lengthen, and start losing that brand-new softness.

Capturing that “squishy” stage preserves something fleeting — something you don’t realize you’ll miss until it’s already gone.

Your Family Is Brand New, Too

Newborn sessions aren’t just about the baby. They’re about the beginning of your family in this new chapter.

The quiet kiss on mom’s head.

The proud smile.

The way dad leans in close.

The way mom instinctively cradles her baby.

These moments tell the story of becoming.

There’s a tenderness in those early days — a mix of exhaustion, awe, and overwhelming love. Photographing it allows you to freeze that feeling forever.

They Change Faster Than You Think

In the first two weeks, babies:

  • Lose their newborn fuzz.
  • Begin to stretch out.
  • Become more alert.
  • Start making more eye contact.
  • Develop little expressions and preferences.

Every day brings something new. And while that growth is beautiful, it also means this stage is incredibly brief.

Two weeks is a tiny window — but it’s the sweet spot.

You’ll Never Regret Having These Photos

In the haze of early motherhood, it can feel hard to plan anything. But years from now, you won’t remember the laundry or the long nights.

You’ll remember how small they were.

How they fit perfectly on your chest.

How their head smelled.

How your whole world shifted in an instant.

Photographs from those first two weeks preserve that softness — the sleepy, squishy, heart-bursting newness that disappears before you’re ready.

And one day, when that tiny baby is running across the room or heading off to school, you’ll look back at these images and remember exactly how it felt in the beginning.

If you’re expecting, I always recommend reserving your newborn session during pregnancy and scheduling it within the first 7–14 days after birth. That way, we can capture your baby exactly as they are — brand new, beautifully sleepy, and impossibly tiny. 🤍
